Dead End. A branch leading from a soil, waste or vent pipe, building drain sewer which is terminated at a developed length of 2 feet or more by means of a plug or other fitting. A dead end is not used to admit water or air into the piping system.  
Dead Flat. In paint, having no gloss at all.  
Dead Knot. Loose knot in wood, usually dark in color.  
Dead Level Asphalt. A roofing asphalt that has a softening point of 140° F (60° C).  
Dead Level. An absolutely horizontal roof. slope.  
Dead Load. The load due to the vertical weight of all permanent structural and nonstructural elements of a building, such as walls, floors, and roofs.  
Dead Mans Switch. One that stays in on or off position only as long as it is held there manually.  
Dead Space. 1. A space with an abundance of absorptive surfaces that does not support sound. 2. A space between walls or a floor and ceiling.  
Deadbolt. A lock bolt having no spring action nor bevel, and which is operated by a key or a turn piece.  
Deadening. Construction intended to prevent the passage of sound.  
Dead-Front. As applied to switches, circuit breakers, switchboards, control panels, and panelboards, so designed, constructed, and installed that no current-carrying parts are normally exposed on the front.  
Deadlock. A lock equipped with a deadbolt only.  
Deadman. A large or heavy object buried in the ground as an anchor.  
Deaeration. Act of separating air from substances.  
Deal. Softwood timber.  
Debris. Accumulated rubbish, trash and fragments of waste.  
Debt, Long Term. See Long Term Debt.  
Debt, Short Term. See Short Term Debt.  
Debt. Money that is owed.
