Term Definition
Stipulated Sum Contract. A construction contract where the contract sum is a lump sum agreed amount; also called a Lump Sum Contract.  
Stirrup Pump. A portable hand pump stabilized with a foot bracket, used especially for fire-fighting.  
Stirrup Tie. A stirrup that forms a complete loop, as differentiated from a U-stirrup, which has an open top.  
Stirrup. Reinforcing bars used in beams for shear reinforcement; typically bent into a U-shape or box-shape and placed perpendicular to the longitudinal steel.  
Stock Dyeing. Dyeing raw fibers before they are carded (combed) or spun.

Stone Paver. Blocks of rock processed by shaping, cutting or sizing, used for driveways, patios and walkways.

Stonemason. A mason who builds in stone.  
Stonemasonry. stonework; the work of a stonemason.  
Stoneware. A vitreous or semivitreous ceramic ware of fine texture, made primarily from nonrefractory fire clay.  
Stonework. Masonry of stones and mortar.  
Stool. A wood molding that provides an interior ledge at the sill of a window.  
Stoop. A small unroofed porch.  
Stop Box or Curb Box. An adjustable cast iron box that is brought up to grade with a removable iron cover; by inserting a shutoff rod down into the stop box it is possible to turn off the water supply at the curb cock.  
Stop Notice. A charge against construction funds in the hands of a property owner or a construction lender for the value of work or materials incorporated into a construction project; this is a lien on funds to be paid whereas a mechanics lien is a lien on property; this is usually the only form of remedy to one who has done work for a Public Works Agency.

Stop. A molding covering the crack between a door or window and its frame.

Storage Tank Removal. The act or process of removing an old storage tank.  
Storage Tank. A large receptacle used for the holding, transporting, or storage of liquids or gases.

Store. 1. A room or building for retail sales; a shop. 2. A reserve supply of goods.  
Storefront. 1. The facade which is constructed on the street side of a building or structure into which persons can enter and transact business. 2. A steel or aluminum tube frame and glass wall.  
Storm Drain. A drain used for carrying rain water, cooling water, and sub-surface water, but not waste or sewage.  
Storm Sash. An extra window usually placed on the outside of an existing window as additional protection against cold weather and air infiltration; also called a Storm Window.  
Storm Sewer. A sewer used for conveying groundwater, rainwater, surface water, or similar nonpollutional wastes.
