Term Definition
Softwoods. 1.Generally, one of the botanical groups of trees that in most cases have needlelike or scalelike leaves, the conifers. 2. The wood produced by such trees. 3. The term has no reference to the actual hardness of the wood.  
Soil and Waste Pipe. Plastic, copper, cast iron or DWV drainage, water and vent.  
Soil Bend. A piece of short, curved pipe, like an elbow, used to connect two straight links of pipe in a sewage system.  
Soil Cover. A light covering of plastic film, roll roofing, or similar material used over the soil in crawl spaces of buildings to minimize moisture permeation of the area; also called Ground Cover.  
Soil Gases. Gases that enter a building from the surrounding ground, such as radon, volatile organics, and pesticides.  
Soil Investigation. see Geotechnical Investigation.  
Soil Pipe. A plumbing line that carries waste water from water closets and urinals.  
Soil Report. A geological report by a geological engineer providing information on subsurface soil conditions.  
Soil Stack. A vertical pipe used to carry human waste from toilets; the vertical main piping of a DWV system.  
Soil Structure Interaction. The effects of the properties of both soil and structure upon response of the structure.  
Soil Test. see Geotechnical Investigation.  
Soil, Heavy. see Heavy Soil.  
Soil. The loose surface material of the earths crust; the unconsolidated natural surface material above bedrock.  
Soils Engineer. A professional engineer whose area of expertise is in soil analysis, foundation design, drainage, and the effects of other site conditions on the design of structures.  
Sol-Air Temperature. The combined solar and convective sources of heat at the outside surface of a wall or roof.  
Solar Array. An array of panels for collecting heat from the sun for use in a solar heating system.  
Solar Collector. see Collector, 2.  
Solar Heat Gain through Fenestration. The amount of heat gain through a particular cladding system or window.  
Solar Heat. Heat created by visible and invisible energy waves from the sun.  
Solar Heating. A heating system utilizing heat from the sun.  
Solar Panel. A battery of solar cells.  
Solar Screen Title. Tile manufactured for masonry screen construction.  
Solar System. The sun and the celestial bodies whose motion it governs; the sun, with the planets, moons, asteroids, and comets that orbit it.  
Solar Systems. Heating and cooling systems that are based on solar energy.  
Solarium. A glass enclosed porch or room with exposures to the sun, used for relaxation or therapy.  
Solder. A fusible alloy, usually of lead and tin, used to join less fusible metals or wires.  
Soldering Iron. A pointed or wedge-shaped tool that is heated electrically or by other means, used in soldering.  
Solderless Pressure Connector. A device which establishes the connection between two or more conductors or between one or more conductors and a terminal by means of mechanical pressure and without the use of solder.  
Soldier Course. Oblong tile or brick laid with the long side vertical and all joints in alignment.  
Soldier. A brick laid on its end, with its narrow face toward the outside of the wall.
